Hi, Robins! The next Challenge should be a fun one. The topic for Saturday, January 28th is

Branches

We had a Challenge years ago for photographing tree roots, but this time let's go higher on the tree! Or you can photograph a branch library, branches of your family tree, the branching of railroad tracks or anything else you can apply the word "branches" to, literally or figuratively. The usual guidelines apply:

2. Please WAIT until Saturday, January 28th to post your entry. If you're a day late, that's okay; better a little late than way early! On the day is best, though, so people can find your post!

The next Round Robin Photo Challenge topic is a simple, four-letter word.

Home

On Saturday, January 14th, show us your home, or someone else's home, or something that means home to you. It could be as simple as a shot of your front door or your favorite chair, or as elaborate as a montage like my attempt above (only better). The usual guidelines apply:

Round Robin Challenge: The Times They Are a Changin'

Hi, Robins! The next date for the Round Robin Photo Challenge falls of New Year's Eve, and on that day we'll all probably have other things on our minds besides photo memes. Let's work those very distractions into our next topic, shall we? The Challenge for Saturday, December 31st is

The Times They Are a Changin'

The idea is simple: just show us something that represents the passage of time. It could be a clock at midnight, or decorations for a New Year's Eve party, or a bit of time lapse photography. Maybe it's before and after photos of a puppy that's now a dog, or a building completed or demolished, or a relic of times gone by. By way of example, the photo above is of the It's a Small World clock tower at Disneyland, taken December 25th, 2005. If you were to go to Disneyland today, you'd find that clock still ticking - but the 50th Anniversary mouse ears logo is long gone. Times have changed!

Here are the usual guidelines on how this Challenge works, with one minor variation:

1. Please RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and blog URL. Let me know if you're new to the Challenge, or using a new blog for it.

Hi, Robins! Christmas is coming, and with it comes a familiar sight (and smell) - and I don't mean cookies! The topic for Saturday, December 17th is

Evergreen

Maybe it's a Christmas tree, or a wreath. Maybe it's a tree on top of a mountain. Or maybe it's a plant with leaves instead of needles, that's green all year round because that's how it is for that particular species in your corner of the world, or because it gets the right amount of sun and you water it every day. If it's a green plant, and doesn't lose its leaves when winter comes on, I want to see it!

Round Robin Challenge: Family

We're coming to a time of year when one subject is on the minds of many people, more than at any other time of year. The Round Robin topic for Saturday, December 3rd is

Family

For those of us who celebrate the various November and December holidays, this is a time for family reunions and get-togethers - but not always. Some people gather only with their immediate family, and others with a family of choice, none of whom may be actually related. And if no family is available, this is the time of year when we tend to miss them the most.

So that's your Challenge: show us a family, or members of a family. Your family would be best, but any family will do: your friend's family, your surrogate family, or even a family of strangers. It can even be a picture of something that symbolizes the concept of family. Just show us something - someone - that means family to you!

Round Robin Challenge: Gone

Hi, Robins! Let's get right to it, shall we? The topic for Saturday, November 19th is

Gone

The idea is simple. Show us a place or an object where there's evidence that something used to be there, but isn't there any more. It can be a closed business, an empty lot, a schoolyard closed for the weekend, or something much smaller and happier, like last year's birds' nest, or a cake plate on which there's nothing left but crumbs. Maybe it's a package of something, but you've used up whatever the product was. Or perhaps it's your own head, and you've managed to get rid of every last gray hair! A set of before-and-after photos will also work for this. Just find something that isn't there any more, and show us its absence. Get it?

Here are the guidelines. Please take a moment to read them, especially if you haven't been playing with us very long:

Round Robin Challenge: Scary

Hi, Robins! Our next Challenge will miss Halloween by nearly a week, but it's got me thinking about a concept that has meaning beyond that one day. The topic for Saturday, November 5th is

Scary

Scary doesn't have to mean ghoulies and ghosties and long legged beasties, vampires and zombies and things that go bump in the night. A dangerous road can be scary. Driving in a hurricane is scary. Getting ready for a job interview may be scary. Shadows in an empty house after midnight can be scary. Asking someone out can be scary. A dentist's office can be scary. Spiders and snakes can be scary. And yes, certain movies, tv shows, books and so on can be scary. Just find someone or something that scares you, and photograph it. If you're not scared, but someone else is, that works too! You know the drill:

Hi, Robins! There's an expression, "Good things come in little boxes." Let's find out whether that's true, shall we? The topic for Saturday, October 22nd is

Little Boxes

As we prepare for Halloween and the holidays that follow, we may be putting things in little boxes, or taking them out, or buying things that are already in their little boxes. Maybe it's an individual box of candy, or a key ingredient for the holiday baking. Maybe it's your grandmother's old brooch that's perfect for your daughter's Halloween costume. Or perhaps it's something you already have: a decorative box on the mantle, a box of crayons, or, well, anything, really! It could even be an empty box you keep around because it's pretty, or because you plan to use it again this Christmas. Whatever it is, photograph it, and get ready to show it to us on Saturday, October 22nd!

Hi, Robins! I am having severe computer connectivity problems, so if this entry is not just late but also lacking the usual details, I hope you'll understand! I'll fix it up when I can. Meanwhile, let's get the next Challenge announced, shall we? The topic for Saturday, September 10th is

Shades of Grey

Or Gray, if you prefer that spelling.

Either way, let's see what your camera can find in shades of gray. It can be something that's naturally grey, or you can show us a photo in grayscale instead of color. Show me gray paint, grey stone, paper, clouds, athletic shoes, metals... well, you get the idea! I'm especially looking to see more than one shade of gray in the picture. Hence the topic title!

What do you think of when you hear the words, "The Great Outdoors"? What does that phrase mean to you? What kind of outdoors appeals to you? Is it someplace with a big sky and mountains all around, or a park with a little bridge and some ducks? Is it a road you drive on for hours, passing woods and fields and farms, or a path you hike up to a small seasonal waterfall? On the Ceiling

Let's face it. some ceilings are boring. But some are well worth a look. Show us an interesting ceiling: a vaulted ceiling, one with exposed wood beams, or even a popcorn ceiling with an intriguing water stain. Maybe it's a ceiling from which hangs an awesome chandelier, or a ceiling covered with mirror tiles, or a ceiling with a cat peeking through. Whatever it is, if it's interesting, I want to see it!

Hi, Robins! This is one of mine, and it's a bit different. I hope you like it! The topic for Saturday, July 30th is

HIDDEN

What I'd like to see here is hiding places or things hidden, or both. Show us a secret compartment, a doormat where an extra key might be stashed, a puzzle box, a secret fort, a romantic hideaway, a locked diary, a locket, a drawer where you used to hide the candy until your husband or kids found it...well, you get the idea! Ruth didn't specify any guidelines, but what I'd like to see is old and new versions of the same basic thing. Old and new shoes, furniture, cars, books, or anything else you can think of will do the trick. Adding something borrowed and something blue is totally optional!

Hi, Robins! Our next topic is a simple idea. For Saturday, June 18th, show us something

BIG.

Size is relative, so you've got a large amount of leeway on this! Maybe it's something larger than life, like a fifty food statue of a small bird. Maybe it's an extra large example of whatever it is: the biggest cat you've ever seen, a pumpkin big enough for Cinderella to ride in, or a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Whatever you chose to photograph, the Challenge will be to impress the view with how BIG it looks in the picture!

Photograph a scene in a park, preferably with people enjoying the place. Your venue can be the little park down the street, a big city park, Yellowstone Park or anything in between. Graffiti is generally illegal, and it can be a terrible eyesore, ruining the look of buildings, vehicles and street signs. But some of it is rather attractive, and sometimes it's even profound. (Ask Carly about that one.) So for our next Challenge, photograph some bit of graffiti where you are: beautiful or ugly, profane or inspiring. You know how this works, right?

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge takes place the day before Easter, one of many religious and secular celebrations that take place around this time of year. The topic for Saturday, April 23 is:

Springtime Celebrations

I'll be celebrating Holy Week on that day, specifically Holy Saturday, and also the first episode of the new season of Doctor Who. You may be celebrating Passover instead. This time of year you may also be enjoying a charity walk, an annual flower or boat or home show, or some other local event. Or you could simply celebrating the change of seasons with a picnic or a walk in the woods.

There are also a bewildering number of obscure and not-so-obscure celebrations in April, from International Guitar Month to National Karaoke Week, from International Juggler's Day to World Penguin Day! It's true! Check out the list on this page; it's full of fun celebrations. Pick one that appeals to you, whether it's Maundy Thursday or World Laboratory Day, photograph something that relates to it, and get ready to post your pictures on Saturday, April 23rd.

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge is inspired by the fact that I'm going to be 54 years old in less than two weeks. The Challenge for Saturday, March 12th is

Note the plural: not just one age, but a comparison, a contrast. Maybe you have photos of Cuddles as both a kitten and an elderly cat, or your daughter in preschool and at her wedding. Perhaps it's a single photo: grandparents with grandbabies, big sister and little brother, or mother and child looking alike except for the age difference. Be creative! I'd especially like to see photos that show different ages but are related to each other in some way. For example, the little girl above is Eva's great-great-granddaughter. Plus there are birthday balloons!

And Now A Special Announcement...

Now, here is how I came up with this week's topic. This is my last Round Robin Challenge as a co-host with Karen. Yep. It's true! As you know, I took a few months off from actively posting on my blog, Ellipsis, because I was feeling stressed out and feeling blah. I just wasn't finding the creativity or the drive, and with that feeling came what felt like the inability to properly encourage others. The whole idea around the Round Robin Challenges was to share a mutual love of photography with others, and to give and get feedback and hopefully grow in my pursuit. Photography is more then a hobby for me, it is as much a part of my life as breathing is.

If I can't be an effective host, if I can't give it my all, I don't want to do it. Right now I am on overload with stuff in my private life. I am OK, and I am getting back to a good place, but I still feel a bit burned out. So, while this is my last time hosting, I will be playing along from time to time, and I have told Karen that I can probably step in from time to time as she needs me. So who knows, I might host one or two more later this year, you never know! And, don't forget, I am still hosting the Monday Photo Shoot, at least for the foreseeable future. In fact, we are up and running now, and you are all invited to participate. Just drop by my blog, Ellipsis, every Monday morning to get the details.

Anyway, Karen has been an amazing person to share a meme with, and she is fantastic at hosting the Round Robin Challenges, so carry on, have fun, and I will see you around!

Hi, Robins! for our second Challenge of 2011, let's dip into the topic pool for one of Steven's "open" topics. The Round Robin Challenge for Saturday, January 15th is

Steven (former cohost of this meme and ace photographer of the late, lamented (sometimes)photoblog) described the topic this way:

Show us a photo you always wanted to take. Open theme, have fun.

Have you been meaning to take your camera to the park, the mountains, the lake, the zoo or the museum, but just haven't gotten around to it? Is there a particular tree, building or person you'd like to photograph, but the opportunity never arose? What about that photographic challenge you've been meaning to tackle - trick photography, odd angles, or even your first decent photo of the moon? Here is your chance to go after that photo you've been meaning to take, but never did.

Oh, and one more thing: Steven used to accompany his "open" themes with a call for new Round Robin topics as suggested by YOU! The topic pool is running low, and consists mostly of topics from people who haven't played in a while. So as part of your entry, tell us briefly what it is you've been wanting to photograph, and what topics you would like to see in a future Challenge. Your suggestions will refill our topic pool so we can try out some brand new Challenges this year. Sound good? All right, then! Just remember, the usual guidelines apply:

Hi, Robins! December seems like a great time to try out this Round Robin topic from Ruth, the Scrabblequeen, suggested in August of this year. The topic for Saturday, December 18th, is

The holidays are full of symbols, of course, some more obvious than others. But if holiday symbolism doesn't appeal, there are lots of other ways to go with this, from the symbols on traffic signs to icons (statues, flags, etc.) representing concepts. Round Robin Challenge: Colorblind

Hi Robins! This next Challenge was suggested by Nancy of Nancy Luvs Pix, three years ago this month. The topic for Saturday, November 20th is

Nancy described the concept this way:

Basically, take a photo of something, change the color...make it interesting!

Most photo editing software has controls for modifying colors. If you don't have Photoshop or something similar, you can use any of a number of online photo editors. For example, I just found one called LunaPic, which has several really interesting color effects. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Round Robin Challenge: In the Window

Hi, Robins! Way back in 2007, Tammie Jean, formerly of the blog Long Drives to Nowhere, suggested the topic "Windows." A year later, Momma of Sandcastle Momma suggested "Outside Looking In." Let's combine those two ideas, shall we? The topic for Saturday, November 6 is

"In the Window"

The idea for this one is to stand (or sit) outside a window, and photograph through it to whatever is inside. This can be a window of your house, a car window, the window of a business, or a display case, or even a window in your wallet. The only catch is that you are outside that window, and whatever you're photographing is inside. Perhaps there's a big holiday display window at a nearby department store. Perhaps you keep knickknacks on a window ledge and they can be seen from outside. Or you may be looking through a window at a beloved pet who is waiting to greet you! Whichever way you do it, there will probably be reflections to be coped with, and angles to be considered. That's why it's a Challenge!

Round Robin Challenge: Bridge

Hi, Robins! Thanks to everyone who participated in our last Challenge. I really enjoyed seeing the variety of songs illustrated, and the different approaches people had to the topic.

Our next one was suggested by Steven of the much-missed (sometimes)photoblog at the beginning of 2009. I've been wanted to do it for a while now. The topic for Saturday, October 23rd is

Bridge

All around the world there are bridges, in all shapes and sizes, ages and colors. Bridges connect two places, enabling something to pass safely over something else; but the details vary wildly. It can be a little wooden foot bridge over a three foot-wide babbling brook, a drawbridge, a railroad bridge, a stone bridge carved out by the forces of nature, or even that big Golden one over the Bay that our friend Carly loves to capture with her camera. Wherever you live, I can almost guarantee there's an interesting bridge somewhere nearby to photograph.

But just in case there's not, feel free to explore alternative meanings of the word. Photograph the bridge of a nose, a game of bridge, or even something metaphorical, such as a bridge between two cultures. All I ask is that you follow the usual guidelines:

Hi, Robins! I had a fun idea today for a Round Robin topic, so let's just go with it, shall we? The topic for Saturday, October 9th is

Pick a song you like, and give us your photographic interpretation of all or part of that song's lyrics. You can either include the relevant section of the lyrics or, for a really well-known song, ask people to guess what you're illustrating. For example, what Beatles song does this photo illustrate?*

(The answer is at the end of this entry.)

The song you illustrate with your photo(s) can be old or new, world-famous or obscure. It's totally up to you what song you choose and how you interpret it. Just keep in mind all the usual guidelines:

Hi, Robins! Time to announce the next Challenge. For this one I'm going to combine two old topic suggestions into one general theme. The Challenge for Saturday, August 14th is

Back when he was still blogging, Steven of (sometimes)photoblog came up with "The Temperature Is...", which he described this way:

A photograph which represents the temperature. Hot, cold or in between. Hard shadows to show the bright sun for example. The soft shadows of a cool cloudy day. Ice and snow if you got it!

Julie of Julie Barrett's Journal had a similar theme in mind:

"Weather." Not just your average bit o' fluffy clouds here - try for something unusual or extreme. Obviously, it's okay to dip into the archives for this one. Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with deadlines.

Got the idea? Basically, we're looking for anything to do with the weather. You can go for something subtle: colors of sky and qualities of light that we associate with hot or cool days. Or show us the most extreme weather your camera can find, or has ever found: blizzards, ice storms, hail, lightning storms, floods, serious fog, or the opposite: sandstorms, dust storms, or a day so hot that the air shimmers and mirages appear. Show us what you've got! Just remember our usual guidelines:

Carly and I have been raiding the topic pool of your suggestions for something like five years now, and haven't asked for fresh input for at least a year and a half. Obviously we're rather use YOUR fresh topic ideas, so please include three future topic suggestions in your entry. Who knows, we may be announcing your Challenge topic before the summer is out!

Round Robin: "Guess What This Is!"

Hi, Robins! The next topic was suggested by Lisa of Lisa's Chaos back in May 2008. The topic for Saturday, July 17th is: NOW CLOSED!

Lisa advises that it works best with macro photography, where you can zoom in close enough that we see shapes and textures, but not the whole thing. But if you have something so unusual that people would be hard pressed to identify it at all, by all means photograph it!

Let's make a game of this, as John Scalzi did with a few of his Monday Photo Shoots back in the day. Don't tell us what your mysterious something is when you first post your entry. Round Robin Challenge: Broken

Hi Robins! The next topic was suggested by Julie of Julie Barrett's Journal back in May 2008. The Round Robin Challenge for Saturday, June 19th is NOW CLOSED!

Broken things are everywhere. They can be very public, or hidden away in drawers and closets. Some are visibly damaged, while others reveal their defect only when you try to use them. Some can be mended or repaired or used anyway, while others can only be thrown away or recycled and replaced. Some have already been lovingly repaired, but will never be truly whole again. Broken things have character, and their own melancholy beauty.

So on Saturday, June 19th, show us something broken, maybe even beautifully broken. And if you fix that thing that was broken, show us how it looks now.

Round Robin Challenge: Garden Portraits

"GARDEN PORTRAITS" NOW CLOSED!

We haven't been doing much in the way of garden photography, so let's fix that! Save the date, because our next Round Robin Challenge will take place on Saturday, June 5th! And our subject will be "Garden Portraits." Our fellow Robin, Sherrie, who authors the blog, Sherrie's Stuff , submitted the idea of "In The Garden" way back in January of 2009, so I thought it would be fun to combine her idea, with an idea I had to showcase a particular part of a garden. When you put them both together, here is what I want you to do. Take an overall photo of a garden, any garden, then choose one flower or one vegetable, and showcase it as a portrait. Really get in there and show us it's beauty! Sound good?

As always, here are some general guidelines for how we play...

1. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE. In this case, the date would be Saturday, June 5th, 2010.

2. Please remember R.S.V.P. your intention to play by providing us with your full information each time you play, using the following format...

Round Robin Challenge: Statues

Hi Robins! The next Challenge was suggested by me exactly two years and one week ago. I think it's time we got around to it, don't you? The topic for Saturday, May 22nd is

Statues

As I said at the time:

Statues - photograph a statue of some sort. It can be as large as the Sphinx in Egypt, or as small as a bowling trophy.

Simple, right? Get out there and photograph any kind of statue, large or small, in a public square, a museum, a church or even on your mantle shelf! Then get ready to post your entry on May 22nd. Here's a quick reminder about our guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date. PLEASE include your complete info every time, thus:

Please proofread your comment for typos, especially in the URL, and make sure it gets successfully posted. We've started to see problems with people posting comments that never show up. If we don't know about your entry or where exactly it's posted, it's kind of hard for us to link to it!

2. DO NOT post before the Challenge date, Saturday, May 22nd. If you're a few days late that's okay, although you probably won't get as many visitors. But please do not post early. As Carly says, it's not a race, and an entry posted early is harder for everyone else to find.

3. DO include a link back to this blog in your entry, so other people can find us and play along. We also encourage you to include a Round Robin graphic, and links to other Robin's blogs. We post the Linking List around midnight Pacific time on the Challenge date, and update it throughout the day.

Round Robin Challenge: Land Or Sea

I used one of my own ideas this week, hope you enjoy it! How does "Land Or Sea" sound? It's an easy concept, simply choose LAND or SEA to photograph and show us what you chose on the day of the challenge! The date for this challenge will be Saturday, May 8th 2010! As always, there are a few things to keep in mind about how to play along with the RRC...

1. Please R.S.V.P. your intention to play by using the following format...

The FULL Internet address of where your submission can be found.

2. Please DO NOT submit your entry prior to the challenge date! You won't be linked to until the day of the challenge, so it does no good to jump the gun. It's NOT a race! Saturday, May 8th is the challenge date, and you will be acknowledged that day.

Announcing the New and Improved Weekend Assignment!

As many of you know, Carly and I (Karen) are involved in three memes. The Round Robin Photo Challenges were started by the two of us, almost by accident, back in 2005. The other two are even older, started on John Scalzi's old AOL Journal By the Way in 2004. Carly hosts one of these, now called the Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot, every week on her blog Ellipsis. The other one, the odd one out, is the classic writing prompt, the Weekend Assignment. As of this week, the Weekend Assignment has a new home.

Round Robin: Anything in Threes (for 4/24/10)

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge was suggested by Marie of the blog Photographs and Memories, way back in 2007. The topic for Saturday, April 24th, is

* * * Anything in Threes # # #

Marie said at the time, NOW CLOSED!

"Anything in 3's, must be the same theme and presented in 3 images."

Get the idea? This Challenge is not to take a picture of three of something, although you can do that too. The Challenge is to take and present three different pictures of the same subject or theme. What subject, what theme? That's totally up to you! Maybe it's three photos of your favorite tree, or of three different bodies of water. Maybe it's three different treatments of the same concept or mood, or three photos of your child. Let's get creative with this one!

Of course the standard guidelines apply:

1. Do RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and blog URL. It helps us a lot if you give your full info each time, and RSVP before the topic date. Like this:

Round Robin Challenge: An Almost Photo

Hi Robins :) NOW CLOSED!

Time for a new challenge! This time around, let's celebrate the "Almost Photo." This challenge was suggested by Steven, way back in 2007! Although he has been taking some time off from things, I am sure he won't mind if we use his idea! The idea is quite simple, just show us a photo that could have been a great picture, but for some reason it just didn't work out!

We will play this challenge on Saturday, April 10th!

As always there are a few guidelines for playing along with this meme...

1. Please DO NOT post your entry prior to the challenge date of APRIL 10th! We don't visit you early. You won't be added to the Linking List until the day of the challenge, and it makes me cranky, so there is NO good reason to do it. OK? :)

Round Robin Challenge: Up to Five Miles Away

Hi, Robins! It's time to announce the next topic! This one was suggested by Carly back in June 2008. The Round Robin Challenge for Saturday, March 27, is

(5.0 miles = 8.04672 km.)

As Carly explains...

The idea is to get in your car, or if you prefer a bike or your own two feet, and show us something in any direction you choose, up to 5 miles from your home. For a little added fun, tell us when you sign up for the challenge, in which direction you plan to go. Let's see which direction gets the most attention.

Simple, right? Pick a direction, travel five miles (about 8 kilometers) in that direction, and then photograph what you find. Maybe there's something within five miles from your home that you've always wanted to photograph. Well, here's your chance - and if it's only three and a half miles away, well, what are we, the Google Maps police? Or maybe you'll generate a random choice of direction (e.g. let someone spin you around, blindfolded, or, um, something) go exactly five miles, and photograph whatever happens to be there. You decide how you want to play this. But please, don't go more than five miles away, okay?

Okay, here's the part where we put in the rules, because even after all these years we still get people who don't quite get how this works:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date (March 27th). Your comment should include your name or handle, blog name, and blog URL, thus:

If it's Sunday, it must be time for an all new challenge! This time around it comes to us by way of our friend Steven. "Look Up/Look Down" is scheduled for Saturday March 13th, 2010. For this one, the perspective is up to you. Pretty straight forward I think, so, let's review the guidelines for play, shall we?

Round Robin Challenge: Blinded By the Light

Hi, Robins! The next topic was suggested by Vicki of the blog Maraca back in 2008. The topic for Saturday, February 27th is

Blinded By The Light

"Photograph anything brilliant and bright."

Now, don't go looking directly at the sun or anything, but do let your camera capture an abundance of light or brightness in some interesting way. Will you photograph natural or artificial light? You can even interpret the words metaphorically, just in case you get a chance to photograph a genius!

Whatever you do, though, please follow our usual guidelines:

Time for a new challenge! Save the date, Saturday February 13th 2010! And what will our challenge be? Glad you asked! It comes to us by way of our friend, and fellow blogger Monica, author of the blog, Shutterly Happy, and theme this time around will be:

"Childhood Memories."

Okay folks, get out your skates, and skate keys, your teddy bears, and your Matchbox cars and your imagination, of course, and take a giant step back in time to childhood. Simon says, share with us what you enjoyed in those carefree days so long ago. You are only limited by your imagination with this one, so why not let it out to play? Show us your Childhood Memories!

As always there are a few guidelines for participation...

1. DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE! It's not a race folks. You don't get to be first, in fact, all it does is confuse things on the day of the challenge, and it makes me grouchy, so please don't do it... ok?

2. Please give us your R.S.V.P. no later then the evening before we play, so we can add you to the Linking List for the next day. We ask that you give us your information in the following manner...

3. If you are new to the challenges... WELCOME! Please sing out in the comments, so we can give you a proper welcome on the day of the challenge! We love new participants! It's also a good idea to read our Welcome Entry, which can be found on the sidebar.

4. You are not late for the challenge if you post after the Saturday date. You are welcome to post your entry anytime through the following Saturday. You will, however, have a better chance of having your entry be seen if you post on the day of the challenge. If you have to be late, let us know, and we will make a note next to your name on the Linking List, so folks know when to come looking.

Round Robin Challenge for 1/30/10: Water

Hi, Robins! Well, we just had a look at Fire with our Candlelight topic, and before that we had the Earthy topic of Roots. So let's go for another of the four classical elements, shall we? The topic for Saturday, January 30th is

Water

as suggested by Angela of Chocolate Syrup for the Soul (her blog is readable by invitation only).

This is a wide-open topic to have fun with. What aspect of water will you show us with your camera? Running water? Bath water? Water in puddles, or water falling from the sky? A glass of water, half empty, or the edge of an ocean, spreading out as far as the camera can see? It's totally up to you!

We do have some guidelines, though, and from time to time it's good to remind folks of them, for people who are new to the Challenges and for people who lose track of details:

1. DO RSVP in the comments with your name or handle, the name of your blog and the blog's full URL, thus:

Please include these details EVERY time you play. It helps us to compile the Linking List, and it cuts down on errors. People frequently change blogs, so don't expect us to assume it's the same blog as last time. Also, please proofread the URL before posting the comment. We tend to post the link you gave us, typo and all, which kind of makes it hard for anyone to reach your blog!

It's also helpful if you leave another comment after you've posted, to let us know your entry is up.

2. DO NOT post your entry before the Challenge date. The idea is for everyone to post on that date (or if necessary, up to six days thereafter), so that readers can conveniently visit all the entries. We don't want to scroll down to something you did two weeks ago.

3. DO make sure the entry is relevant to the Challenge. Occasionally someone leaves a link to something they posted that has little or nothing to do with the topic. At minimum your entry should mention the Round Robin Photo Challenges and the current topic. Otherwise, it's not really a Round Robin entry, is it? Round Robin Challenge for 1/2/10: Roots

As promised, Robins, this is the weekend when we announce the topic for the next Round Robin Photo Challenge, which will take place January 2, 2010. Happy New Year, Happy New Challenges! This one was suggested by Vicki of the blog Maraca. I'll let her introduce it:

==Roots==

NOW CLOSED!

"Roots. Everyone does gnarled branches, twisty trunks, and pretty flowers, but roots have a lot of character too."

They certainly do! But there are other kinds of roots, in case you'd like to photograph those instead: root vegetables, roots of gray hair when it's time to get out the hair coloring again, roots of your family tree, roots of behavior.... Feel free to get creative, whether you're investigating the gnarly bottom of an olive tree or defining your roots some other way!

Whatever you choose to photograph, you have five weeks to do it, in between your holiday shopping and other activities that keep us all busy this time of year. Again, the Challenge date is January 2nd, so there's no big rush at this end. But don't forget to do it, either, okay?

Now listen up, folks: we really need you to leave your complete info if you want to be listed as participating. I literally just pulled an all-nighter and then some, trying to collate info on who all has participated in the RRPC this year, along with everyone's current blog title and URL. We've had nearly a hundred individual Robins this year, with more than a few overlapping first names, blog title changes and entirely different blogs being used by the same person in different Challenges. There have also been quite a few typos in the URLs, so please proofread your comment!

Ideally, you should also leave a comment on the 2nd to let us know you've posted. Please do NOT post before the Challenge date, nor more than six days later than that. On the day would be perfect, thanks! :)

Announcement: To Be Continued!

Hi, Robins!

We've just about reached the time of year when everyone is extra busy with holiday shopping, baking, parties, family reunions, etc. Participation in memes naturally drops off between Halloween and New Year's, displaced by "real life" - whatever that is!

Rather than fight this very reasonable trend, Carly and I are taking a short break. The Round Robin Photo Challenges is going on hiatus for the second time ever, giving us - and you - a chance to rest and recharge, and catch up with the rest of our lives. Let's start fresh with our next Challenge date in the new year, on Saturday, January 2nd, 2010. Just so we're not completely leaving you in the lurch, we'll announce the next topic on Thanksgiving Weekend. Be sure to stop back then for our next inspiring (we hope) theme, and to RSVP.

And thanks, as always, for your support and participation in the Round Robin Photo Challenges. Carly, Steven and I couldn't do it without you!

Save the date! Our next RRC will be held on Saturday, October 17th, and comes to us by way of our friend Terri, author of the blog, "Ways I See The World." She has suggested we take on "Shooting In Low Light, Inside And Out." Sounds pretty straight forward, grab your cameras and show us what you find in low light settings. I hope to see all of you, and maybe a few new faces as well. Here are a few things to keep in mind about how we play...

1. Please give us your R.S.V.P on or before the day of the challenge. It is especially helpful if you sign up no later then the night before, as that is when we compile the Linking List for you.

**R.S.V.P. in the following format...

1. Your First Name or Online Nickname
2. The name of you blog, journal or website
3. The full address of where your RRC entry can be found on the day of the challenge.

Hi, Robins! Once again I'm going to combine two people's topics, not because I want to use up the suggestion pool extra fast, but to give both people credit for their similar ideas. For Saturday, October 3rd, the topic is

Bats leave a bridge over the Rillito at sunset, Tucson, AZ.

Vicki of the blog Maraca calls her version of the topic "Greased Lightning," and explains it this way:

One thing I'd like to learn to do is panning, or following a moving object with the camera so that it stays in focus while the background blurs, giving a sense of motion. I tried it while my son flew his model airplane this fall, without much success. This shot might not have been bad if I had had more of the ground in the frame. Let's call this challenge "Greased Lightning!"

Terri of the blog Ways I See the World calls her version Movement Shots - "birds, children, insects."

So let's do this! Let's capture objects in motion, whether it means moving the camera to keep up, or capturing the blur of movement against a static background.

BOK... BOK... BOK... BOK... means our next challenge is "CHICKENS." Sherrie, author of the blog, Sherrie's Stuff, suggested this subject all the way back in January, somehow this seems like the perfect time to take it on!

Save the date! This challenge will take place on Saturday, September 19th 2009. Everyone is welcome to join us, but there are a few things to keep in mind about how to play this meme...

1. DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE! As Steven says, "this is not a race." And besides, we don't post a linking list until the day of the challenge, so posting early does not get you more traffic to your blog, in fact, it just confuses things. SO, let's not do that ok?

2. Please try to R.S.V.P. your intention to play, prior to the challenge date. We usually compile the Linking List the night before each challenge, so it's a big help if we know at least by the night before each challenge, who will be joining us.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: We need your complete information at the time you R.S.V.P. your intention to play. Here is an example of how to R.S.V.P...

Round Robin Challenge: Politics

Hi, Robins! Our next Round Robin Photo Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th. It's one of Carly's topic suggestions:

Politics

NOW CLOSED!

Here is Carly's original description of the topic:

Whether we like it or not, at least a little politics is a part of all of our lives. City government, state and federal it affects us all. With the upcoming elections, there will be a lot of campaign signs, and political statements being made. Photograph something that says "Politics" to you. Have some fun with it. Buttons, yard signs, a candidate's personal appearance in your town, a protest, a political bumper sticker, anything to do with politics that strikes your fancy.

Here in the U.S. we're a few months away from an off-year election day, but there's a lot of political stuff going on right now in the fight over health care reform. Maybe a mayor is fighting for re-election, or someone is collecting signatures for medical marijuana. Heck, even the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is at least vaguely political. City Hall, a prime minister's official residence, a school board meeting or a vintage I Like Ike button can all be considered political. So grab your camera and photograph the seats of government, the signs, the paraphernalia, the politicians or the people!

Hi, Robins! For the next Challenge, let's combine several suggestions to focus on something we reach for a lot in the summertime - something to drink! Based on my version of this theme, we're calling it

Here's what I originally had to say about this topic:

Bottled Up - Show us a bottle. Is it glass or plastic? Is it old? Is there a message inside? Will the contents give you a buzz, or help you fight a cold? You decide!

Maybe it's not the bottle that matters, but the label. Kim of Nekked Lizard Adventures suggests this variant:

Your favorite wine label (or other favorite beverage)

Carly's suggestion focuses on what's inside the bottle:

Quench My Thirst - Take a photograph of your favorite beverage, in an artistic light. Include a recipe if you have created a completely unique drink.

So there you go! Photograph a bottle or other drinking vessel, its label, and/or whatever liquid refreshment is inside. Make it artsy, make it fun, make it send us running to the fridge or the supermarket, or even the liquor store. It's up to you! Just be sure to follow the usual guidelines:

Round Robin Challenge: My Vehicle Of Choice

Save the date! Our next challenge, "My Vehicle Of Choice" will take place on Saturday, July 25th! This challenge comes to us by way of Suzanne, author of the blog, "Suzyq421's Photo Blog."

It's a pretty simple idea, just grab your cameras and photograph your car. If you don't happen to drive, then your bike or your boat, or your favorite form of mass transit will done just fine. Heck... even good old feet will do as well! That's all there is to it, well, except for a few things we ask you to keep in mind about the challenges...

1. DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE! You will not be linked to until the day of the challenge, so it serves no purpose to post early, and it makes me grumpy... lol... (Just Kidding) so let's not do that... ok? :)

2. Please R.S.V.P. by leaving us your information.

Your first name
The title of your blog, journal or website
The full address of your blog, journal or website

We need this information EACH time you play. Why? Well, because folks sometimes change the address of their blog, or they change the name of their blog, and it can be confusing when we try to link to you. It can be time consuming to create the Linking List each time we play, and as it is for your convenience, please try to help us out by remembering to leave your information so we don't have to track you down, or try to guess if you have played with us before.
