Round Robin Challenge: The Times They Are a Changin'

Hi, Robins! The next date for the Round Robin Photo Challenge falls of New Year's Eve, and on that day we'll all probably have other things on our minds besides photo memes. Let's work those very distractions into our next topic, shall we? The Challenge for Saturday, December 31st is

The Times They Are a Changin'

The idea is simple: just show us something that represents the passage of time. It could be a clock at midnight, or decorations for a New Year's Eve party, or a bit of time lapse photography. Maybe it's before and after photos of a puppy that's now a dog, or a building completed or demolished, or a relic of times gone by. By way of example, the photo above is of the It's a Small World clock tower at Disneyland, taken December 25th, 2005. If you were to go to Disneyland today, you'd find that clock still ticking - but the 50th Anniversary mouse ears logo is long gone. Times have changed!

Here are the usual guidelines on how this Challenge works, with one minor variation:

1. Please RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and blog URL. Let me know if you're new to the Challenge, or using a new blog for it.

2. Please wait for Saturday, December 31st to post your blog entry. Because you may want to capture the times changing from 2011 to 2012, it's also perfectly all right to wait until January 1st to post your photo(s).

3. Please link back to this blog in your entry.

4. Please visit the other participating blogs if you can, and leave a comment if so moved. A list of links will be posted around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated over the next day or two.

That's it! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Evergreen

Hi, Robins! Christmas is coming, and with it comes a familiar sight (and smell) - and I don't mean cookies! The topic for Saturday, December 17th is

Evergreen

Maybe it's a Christmas tree, or a wreath. Maybe it's a tree on top of a mountain. Or maybe it's a plant with leaves instead of needles, that's green all year round because that's how it is for that particular species in your corner of the world, or because it gets the right amount of sun and you water it every day. If it's a green plant, and doesn't lose its leaves when winter comes on, I want to see it!

You know how this works, right?

1. Please RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and blog URL. Let me know if you're new to the Challenge, or using a new blog for it.

2. Please wait for Saturday, December 3rd to post your entry. A day or two late is okay but not ideal.

3. Please link back to this blog in your entry.

4. Please visit the other participating blogs if you can, and leave a comment if so moved. A list of links will be posted around midnight MST on the Challenge date;

That's it! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Family

We're coming to a time of year when one subject is on the minds of many people, more than at any other time of year. The Round Robin topic for Saturday, December 3rd is

Family

For those of us who celebrate the various November and December holidays, this is a time for family reunions and get-togethers - but not always. Some people gather only with their immediate family, and others with a family of choice, none of whom may be actually related. And if no family is available, this is the time of year when we tend to miss them the most.

So that's your Challenge: show us a family, or members of a family. Your family would be best, but any family will do: your friend's family, your surrogate family, or even a family of strangers. It can even be a picture of something that symbolizes the concept of family. Just show us something - someone - that means family to you!

Here are the usual rules, in brief:

4. Please visit the other participating blogs if you can, and leave a comment if so moved. A list of links will be posted around midnight MST on the Challenge date;

That's it! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Gone

Hi, Robins! Let's get right to it, shall we? The topic for Saturday, November 19th is

Gone

The idea is simple. Show us a place or an object where there's evidence that something used to be there, but isn't there any more. It can be a closed business, an empty lot, a schoolyard closed for the weekend, or something much smaller and happier, like last year's birds' nest, or a cake plate on which there's nothing left but crumbs. Maybe it's a package of something, but you've used up whatever the product was. Or perhaps it's your own head, and you've managed to get rid of every last gray hair! A set of before-and-after photos will also work for this. Just find something that isn't there any more, and show us its absence. Get it?

Here are the guidelines. Please take a moment to read them, especially if you haven't been playing with us very long:

1. PLEASE RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date (Saturday, November 19th). It should include your name, blog name and URL, thus:

My hesitation is Gone - I'm gonna play!

Margaret
Tomorrow Is Another Day
http://taraforever.blogspot.com

2. PLEASE WAIT until November 19th to post your entry. This makes it easier for people to see all the posts, including yours!

3. PLEASE INCLUDE a link back here in your entry, so people can find the other Robins, and maybe play along themselves. This is something some people haven't been doing. As a result I can't always tell whether you've played along at all!

4. PLEASE TELL US if this is your first time participating, or if you've changed blogs.

5. PLEASE VISIT other people's entries, and comment if so moved.

That's it! Thanks, and go be photographers!

Karen

P.S. This meme is called The Round Robin Photo Challenges because originally, each of us took a turn coming up with the Challenge topic. Later, Carly and I kept a topic pool of suggestions, but that pool is stale now and running dry. (I hesitate to use a topic suggestion from someone who isn't even blogging anymore.) Please help me refill the pool with topic ideas! If I use it, you'll get full credit in the topic announcement. Thanks!

Round Robin Challenge: Scary

Hi, Robins! Our next Challenge will miss Halloween by nearly a week, but it's got me thinking about a concept that has meaning beyond that one day. The topic for Saturday, November 5th is

Scary

Scary doesn't have to mean ghoulies and ghosties and long legged beasties, vampires and zombies and things that go bump in the night. A dangerous road can be scary. Driving in a hurricane is scary. Getting ready for a job interview may be scary. Shadows in an empty house after midnight can be scary. Asking someone out can be scary. A dentist's office can be scary. Spiders and snakes can be scary. And yes, certain movies, tv shows, books and so on can be scary. Just find someone or something that scares you, and photograph it. If you're not scared, but someone else is, that works too! You know the drill:

1. PLEASE RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and URL, thus:
There's nothing scary here, but I'll do my best!

Morticia

http://alltogetherooky.blogspot.com

2. PLEASE WAIT until Saturday, November 5th to post your entry.

3. PLEASE INCLUDE a link back here in your entry.

4. PLEASE VISIT other Robins' blogs, and comment if so moved.

That's it! Go be photographers - and try not to be TOO scared! ;)

Round Robin Challenge: Little Boxes

Hi, Robins! There's an expression, "Good things come in little boxes." Let's find out whether that's true, shall we? The topic for Saturday, October 22nd is

Little Boxes

As we prepare for Halloween and the holidays that follow, we may be putting things in little boxes, or taking them out, or buying things that are already in their little boxes. Maybe it's an individual box of candy, or a key ingredient for the holiday baking. Maybe it's your grandmother's old brooch that's perfect for your daughter's Halloween costume. Or perhaps it's something you already have: a decorative box on the mantle, a box of crayons, or, well, anything, really! It could even be an empty box you keep around because it's pretty, or because you plan to use it again this Christmas. Whatever it is, photograph it, and get ready to show it to us on Saturday, October 22nd!

You know how this works, right?

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name (or screen name), the name of the blog in which you'll be posting your entry, and that blog's URL, thus:

I'll be posting my box!

Malvina
Made of Ticky-tacky
http://petehadthehitversion.blogspot.com

Be sure to tell me if you're new to the Challenge or whether this is the first time you're participating on this particular blox.

2. DO NOT POST EARLY. Please wait until October 22nd. A few hours early or a day late is no big deal, but the further you are from the scheduled date, the fewer visitors you are likely to get.

3. DO LINK BACK to this blog or specifically this entry in your post.

4. DO VISIT the other participants' blogs, and comment if so moved. We all like to be encouraged.

That's it! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Relax!

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge is another one that offers a lot of latitude in what you choose to show us. The topic for Saturday, October 8th is

Relax

Show us a great place to relax, a way to relax, or someone or something relaxing, or any combination thereof. It's that simple! Maybe it's someone relaxing at the beach, or someone curled up in bed with a good book. Perhaps you find cooking relaxing, or a walk in the woods, or playing Mahjong on the computer. Or maybe you have cats that are geniuses at finding the most comfortable spot in the house. Whatever it is, and wherever it is, let your camera show it to us!

You know the drill:

1. Please RSVP below, thus:

2. Please WAIT until Saturday, October 8th to post your entry. But don't forget when the time comes! (A day or two late is okay but not ideal.)

4. Please VISIT other Robins' entries and COMMENT if so moved.

Round Robin Challenge: My Favorite

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge gives you a wide range of possible subjects at which to point your camera. The topic for Saturday, September 24th is

My Favorite

Your favorite what? Well, that's up to you! Maybe it's your favorite book, a favorite piece of jewelry, a favorite toy or a favorite coffee mug. Maybe you'd rather highlight something more conceptual: your favorite comic strip (see above), tv show, amusement park ride, car make and model, hot beverage or kind of animal. If you like it more than any other whatever-it-is, it counts! Show off your enthusiasm for it with a photo or two!

You know how to do this, right?

1. PLEASE RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date, thus:

This could be my favorite Challenge!

Round Robin Challenge: Shades of Grey

Hi, Robins! I am having severe computer connectivity problems, so if this entry is not just late but also lacking the usual details, I hope you'll understand! I'll fix it up when I can. Meanwhile, let's get the next Challenge announced, shall we? The topic for Saturday, September 10th is

Shades of Grey

Or Gray, if you prefer that spelling.

Either way, let's see what your camera can find in shades of gray. It can be something that's naturally grey, or you can show us a photo in grayscale instead of color. Show me gray paint, grey stone, paper, clouds, athletic shoes, metals... well, you get the idea! I'm especially looking to see more than one shade of gray in the picture. Hence the topic title!

Please RSVP in the comments below, thus:

I'll post only shades of gray!
Davy

http://obscuremonkeessongs.blogspot.com

Let me know if you're a new participant, or an established one using a new blog.

Post your entry on September 10th (no earlier, please!), and link back here in your post.

Please, folks, don''t just add the Round Robin name to an old entry, or post without letting us know about it! I watch the sidebar for your entries, but if I don't know it's coming I may miss it!

That's it for now, I hope! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: The Great Outdoors

Hi, Robins! The last few Round Robin Photo Challenges have been indoor pursuits, so let's go outside for the next one. The Challenge for Saturday, August 27th is

The Great Outdoors

What do you think of when you hear the words, "The Great Outdoors"? What does that phrase mean to you? What kind of outdoors appeals to you? Is it someplace with a big sky and mountains all around, or a park with a little bridge and some ducks? Is it a road you drive on for hours, passing woods and fields and farms, or a path you hike up to a small seasonal waterfall? Maybe it's a backyard with playing children and a swimming pool, or a ballpark where kids are allowed to run the bases after the game. Whatever it means to you, let's see it!

You know the drill:

1. Please RSVP in the comments below, with name, blog name and blog URL.
2. Please WAIT until the Challenge date, Saturday, August 27th, to post your entry.
3. Please LINK back to this blog so people know to look at the other Robins' entries.

Round Robin Challenge: On the Ceiling

Hi, Robins!

For our next Challenge, let's turn a word that was all over the news (in a bad way) into a fun photographic subject! The topic for Saturday, August 13th is

On the Ceiling

Let's face it. some ceilings are boring. But some are well worth a look. Show us an interesting ceiling: a vaulted ceiling, one with exposed wood beams, or even a popcorn ceiling with an intriguing water stain. Maybe it's a ceiling from which hangs an awesome chandelier, or a ceiling covered with mirror tiles, or a ceiling with a cat peeking through. Whatever it is, if it's interesting, I want to see it!

You know the drill:

1. RSVP in the comments below, thus:

I'm all over this topic!

Fred
Dancing on the Ceiling
http://thatsentertainment.blogspot.com

It helps me a lot if you list your name, blog name and URL as above. Thanks!

2. WAIT for the Challenge date, Saturday, August 13th, to post your entry. Otherwise, your entry is likely to be buried by the time others come looking for it. Yes, you can be a day or two late, but if you are you'll probably have fewer people visiting your entry. No, I'm not worried if you post a few hours early, or in a time zone where it gets to be Saturday sooner than in Arizona where I am.

3. LINK to this blog in your entry, or even this specific post. That way, people can find the other entries, and info on how to join in the fun. If you want to also list the other Robins' entries, that will be especially awesome, I will be posting the Linking List in this entry at about midnight MST as the Challenge begins. Please don't take an entry you already posted and add a Round Robin tag. Show us something new!

4. VISIT the other Robins and, if so moved, leave a comment. We all like to be appreciated, don't we?

5. Oh, and please POST YOUR OWN PHOTOS only.

That's it! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Hidden

Hi, Robins! This is one of mine, and it's a bit different. I hope you like it! The topic for Saturday, July 30th is

HIDDEN

What I'd like to see here is hiding places or things hidden, or both. Show us a secret compartment, a doormat where an extra key might be stashed, a puzzle box, a secret fort, a romantic hideaway, a locked diary, a locket, a drawer where you used to hide the candy until your husband or kids found it...well, you get the idea! Don't actually compromise your own security, though. For example, don't show us a doormat and then continue to hide your spare house key beneath it! A former hiding place is probably better than one currently in use.

You know how this works, right?

1. RSVP in the comments below, thus:

I'm ready to show what was hidden!

Yes, you can be a day or two late, but if you are you'll probably have fewer people visiting your entry. Round Robin Challenge: Something Old, Something New

Oops! Sorry, Robins! My mental schedule was thrown off by the holiday weekend.

The new Round Robin Photo Challenge was suggested by Ruth, the ScrabbleQueen, last August. The Challenge for Saturday, July 16th is

Something old, Something new

Ruth didn't specify any guidelines, but what I'd like to see is old and new versions of the same basic thing. Old and new shoes, furniture, cars, books, or anything else you can think of will do the trick. Adding something borrowed and something blue is totally optional!

You know how this works, right?

1. PLEASE RSVP in the comments below so we know you'll be participating, with your name or screen name, blog name, and blog URL, thus:

Amy
Life Beyond Leadworth
http://raggedydoctor.blogspot.com

2. WAIT until Saturday, July 14th to post your entry. A few hours early won't matter, time zones don't matter, but if you post a week early your entry is likely to be buried in your blog by the time we come looking for it! Similarly, if you're a day or two late I will still add you to the Linking List, but you're more likely to get visitors to your blog if you post on the day specified.

3. LINK back to this blog (the whole blog or this entry) from your Challenge entry, so people know how to find the other entries or participate themselves. Linking to the other Robins' blogs is encouraged but not required.

4. EXPLORE what the other Robins come up with, and leave a comment if so moved. That helps to keep us all motivated.

Got it? Good! Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Big

Hi, Robins! Our next topic is a simple idea. For Saturday, June 18th, show us something

BIG.

Size is relative, so you've got a large amount of leeway on this!  Maybe it's something larger than life, like a fifty food statue of a small bird. Maybe it's an extra large example of whatever it is: the biggest cat you've ever seen, a pumpkin big enough for Cinderella to ride in, or a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Whatever you chose to photograph, the Challenge will be to impress the view with how BIG it looks in the picture!

You know the drill:

1. RSVP in the comments below, thus:

I've got big ideas for this!

2. Go be photographers!

3. Post your photos on Saturday, June 18th. If you're a day or two late, that's okay, but please don't post early, and please don't forget to post at all!

4. Include a link back here so people can see all the different entries.

5. It's always nice if you take the time to comment on the different entries.

That's it! Have fun, and we'll see you soon!

Round Robin Challenge: In the Park

Hi, Robins! I had an idea for a Challenge today, so let's just go with that. The topic for Saturday, June 4th is

In the Park

Photograph a scene in a park, preferably with people enjoying the place. Your venue can be the little park down the street, a big city park, Yellowstone Park or anything in between. A public garden or plaza also counts, an amusement or theme park, a zoological park, or even a car park! Just remember the usual guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date, Thus:

I'll post pretty pixelated pictures of my Park!

2. DO not post before the date, but you can post it a day or two late if necessary. On the date is best!

3. DO link back here, so people can check out the other entries as well!

That's it! Go be photographers, and we'll check out your work on Saturday, June 4th!

Round Robin Challenge: Graffiti

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge was suggested back in 2009 by Gattina of Keyhole Pictures. The topic for Saturday, May 21st is

Graffiti

Graffiti is generally illegal, and it can be a terrible eyesore, ruining the look of buildings, vehicles and street signs. But some of it is rather attractive, and sometimes it's even profound. (Ask Carly about that one.) So for our next Challenge, photograph some bit of graffiti where you are: beautiful or ugly, profane or inspiring. You know how this works, right?

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:

I wall be there!

Michaelangelo
Painting on the Ceiling
http://notaninjaturtle.blogspot.com

2. DO NOT post BEFORE the Challenge date. If you need to set it up beforehand, most blogging platforms will let you schedule an entry to post on a certain date and time. But yes, you may post up to 6 days AFTER the date if you forget or something comes up that delays your entry. That said, you will get more visitors to your entry if you post on the Challenge date. I, for one, have a bad habit of forgetting to look again once the weekend's over.

3. DO mention the Round Robin and link back to this blog. (If there's no link or mention, how is that a Round Robin entry?) Including a linking list to the other entries is encouraged but not mandatory. Also, it's helpful to stop by here and leave another comment with your specific link once your entry is posted.

That's it - well, the short version, anyway! If you need further guidelines, please check out our Welcome and Rules of Play entry, or drop me an email at mavarin2 (at) gmail.com. Now, go be photographers! I look forward to seeing everyone's entries on Saturday, May 21st!

In the meantime, don't forget this other meme:

Round Robin Challenge: Big Wheels, Little Wheels

Hi, Robins! Our next Challenge was suggested by our friend Carly back in 2008. The topic for Saturday, May 7th is

Big Wheels, Little Wheels

Carly wrote:
Take a photo of a wheel. A big wheel like on a truck, or a little wheel as on a child's toy. It can also me a wheel of cheese. An antique sewing machine wheel, or even a whirlytwirly.

This should be wheely, wheely fun! (Sorry.)

The usual guidelines apply:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:

Round Robin Challenge: Springtime Celebrations

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge takes place the day before Easter, one of many religious and secular celebrations that take place around this time of year. The topic for Saturday, April 23 is:

Springtime Celebrations

I'll be celebrating Holy Week on that day, specifically Holy Saturday, and also the first episode of the new season of Doctor Who. You may be celebrating Passover instead. This time of year you may also be enjoying a charity walk, an annual flower or boat or home show, or some other local event. Or you could simply celebrating the change of seasons with a picnic or a walk in the woods.

There are also a bewildering number of obscure and not-so-obscure celebrations in April, from International Guitar Month to National Karaoke Week, from International Juggler's Day to World Penguin Day! It's true! Check out the list on this page; it's full of fun celebrations. Pick one that appeals to you, whether it's Maundy Thursday or World Laboratory Day, photograph something that relates to it, and get ready to post your pictures on Saturday, April 23rd.

You know how this works, right?

1. RSVP below.
2. Take your pictures.
3. Wait until April 23rd to post your entry. (Most blogging platforms let you schedule an entry to post at a later date or time.)
4. Include a link back here in your entry.
5. Visit other people's entries. That's half the fun!

That's it for now. Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Collections

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge was suggested by Marina of MilePebbles back in January 2009. The topic for Saturday, April 9th is

Collections
Collections

Whether it's seashells, stamps, rocks, boyfriends(!), dolls, fountain pens or anything else, show us your collection or collections! It's as simple as that! You know how to play, right?

Step 1: RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and URL. If you can, please also include a suggestion for a future topic. For example:

I'm collecting photos for this Challenge!

Micky
Star Collector
http://obscuremonkeeshits.blogspot.com

P.S. I'd like to see "Guitars and Drums" as a future Round Robin topic.

Step 2: Go be photographers!

Step 3: WAIT until Saturday, April 9th to post your collection photo(s) in a blog entry. Alternatively, write it up ahead of time and schedule it to post on that date. Be sure to include a link back to the Round Robin Photo Challenges blog.

Step 4: Don't forget to post your entry when the time comes!

Step 5: Check out the other Robins' entries!

One other thing: all the topic suggestions in the Round Robin topic pool are now over a year old, some of them as much as four years old. Many of them were made by people who no longer play, and in some cases by people who have stopped blogging at all. PLEASE help me replenish the pool by suggesting future topics! Thanks!

Round Robin Challenge: Winter Meets Spring

Hi, Robins! It's time to announce the next Challenge, and a good time for Suzanne R's topic suggestion from January 2009. The theme for Saturday, March 26th is

Winter Meets Spring

Spring is coming, but Winter seldom goes quietly, relaxing its grip on the land. Ideally I'd like to see pictures that show signs of both seasons, the remnant of winter paired with the promise of spring.

(Oh, why do I assign challenges that are almost impossible to do in Tucson? But that's my problem, not yours!)

You know how this works, right?

1. RSVP below with your name or handle, blog name and URL.

2. WAIT until the Challenge date, Saturday, March 26th, to post your entry. Yes, you can post a few days later if you must, but please don't post it early. And please don't forget to post at all! We've had a few no-shows lately, and that diminishes the fun as we go looking at each other's entries!

3. Please mention the Round Robin Photo Challenges and link back to this blog in your entry, so others can join in the fun!

That's it! Go be photographers! Happy hunting for the juxtaposition of winter and spring!

Round Robin Challenge: Ages

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge is inspired by the fact that I'm going to be 54 years old in less than two weeks. The Challenge for Saturday, March 12th is

Ages

Note the plural: not just one age, but a comparison, a contrast. Maybe you have photos of Cuddles as both a kitten and an elderly cat, or your daughter in preschool and at her wedding. Perhaps it's a single photo: grandparents with grandbabies, big sister and little brother, or mother and child looking alike except for the age difference. Be creative! I'd especially like to see photos that show different ages but are related to each other in some way. For example, the little girl above is Eva's great-great-granddaughter. Plus there are birthday balloons!

You know the rest:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:
Don't be afraid to let them show!

Round Robin Challenge: Door Number Three

Hi, Robins! Our next Challenge was suggested by Vicki of the blog Maraca, back in January 2009. The topic for Saturday, February 26th is:

Door Number Three

Vicki's description is as follows:
I love doors of all sorts: old ones, new ones, hidden ones, forgotten ones. How about doing a set of three, each with its own personality and story?
So that's your Challenge! Pick three doors to photograph, and show us all three in your entry. They can be three doors from the same locale or sharing some characteristic, or they can just be totally unrelated doors you happen to like. To make things extra interesting, you may want to explain what is special about these particular doors, but that's not required. (For example, all three doors in the composite above were photographed at night in the fake Wild West village Trail Dust Town.)

The usual guidelines apply:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:
Don't be afraid to let them show!
