Round Robin Challenge: Looking Forward

Hi, Robins! Still with us? This next Challenge topic is inspired by the coming of the New Year. The topic for Saturday, January 11, 2014 is

Looking Forward

If New Year's Eve is about looking back on the past, "auld acquaintance" and the events of the year just ending, then the early days of the New Year are about looking forward to the challenges and possibilities to the year just starting. But what do we see as we look forward? Can we see the goal clearly, or is there a mountain-sized obstacle in our way? Is our path straightforward, or full of twists and turns? Is it clear sailing ahead, or are there storm clouds on the horizon? Is it going to be an uneventful trip, or a bumpy ride?

Okay, enough with the metaphor. What I'd like to see is photos that look forward, implying movement in that direction. You may be pointing your camera at the road ahead, or looking forward across the bay, lake or ocean from the prow of a ship, or along a crowded sidewalk to a particular landmark up ahead. Get it? And if the photo says something about the way you expect your life to go in 2014, so much the better!

The usual guidelines apply:

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures that are Looking Forward. Archived photos or videos are okay as long as you took them yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s) or video(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, January 11, 2014, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

That's all there is to it! Have fun, and go be photographers! Oh, and Happy new Year!

Round Robin Challenge: Lights! Camera! Action!

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge topic has (at least) two completely different meanings behind it, and thus two ways to go about creating your entries. The topic for Saturday, December 28, 2013 is

Lights! Camera! Action!

These are the classic words directors used to start filming a scene, with the lights lighting, the camera rolling and the actors acting! But it occurred to me the other day that the combination of lights, camera and action can be something else entirely. Think of the way the lights of moving cars can streak colors in a photo with a long exposure, or the excitement of lightning captured by a camera as it crosses the sky. Falling meteors, still lights photographed by a camera in motion - all of these combinations and more can lead to some interesting effects!

Alternatively, you may prefer to make a little foray into the motion picture business yourself! Most digital camera and camera phones now have video capabilities, and you can put together simple short movies with all sorts of software and smartphone apps these days, such as Majisto, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, and social media quickies such as Vine and Capture. Google+ will even make little almost-movies automatically from a series of related photos, although these can only be viewed on Google+ itself.

Third option - I was only going for two options, but what the heck! - is to photograph (or find archived photos you already took) of people making movies or tv shows. If you filmed the filming, so much the better. If you filmed the filming of lights in action, then you're a triple threat!

Aside from your multiple choice options, the usual guidelines apply:

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures or videos related to Lights, Camera and Action! Archived photos or videos are okay as long as you took them yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s) or video(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, December 28th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album.

Round Robin Challenge: Pretty Paper

Hi, Robins! Hanukkah is in full swing and Christmas is coming. For many of us it's a time for buying and wrapping presents. That's the inspiration for our next Challenge, The topic for Saturday, December 14th is:

Pretty Paper

Willy Nelson sings about "Pretty Paper," as in wrapping paper:
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
Wrap your presents to your darling from you
Pretty pencils to write I love you
Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue
...but of course there are lots of other kinds of pretty paper in the world, such as stationery, art prints, children's drawings, and so on. Even as we move to a supposedly "paperless society," there is still plenty of pretty paper in the world - so show us some!

You know how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures of pretty paper of some sort. Archived photos are okay as long as you took them yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, December 14th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

Round Robin Challenge: Family

Hi, Robins! As we head into the holiday season, there will be lots of opportunities for families to do things together, whether it's eating a turkey dinner, attending a sporting event, Christmas shopping or just hanging out at home. That's the inspiration for the next Challenge. The topic for Saturday, November 30th is

 Family

You can photograph one member of your own family, or a whole family reunion. Or maybe it's someone else's family. (But try not to invade their privacy!)  It can even be something that represents family to you. Whatever it is, we want to see it! All I ask is that you take the photo(s) yourself. No shots of Great Uncle Arthur as photographed by your grandmother in 1947!

You know how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures of family, or representing family. Archived photos are okay as long as you took them yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, November 30th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album.

Round Robin Challenge: All Natural Colors

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge is about color, but not about a specific color. Instead I want you to try to capture colors that are as true to life as we can get them. The topic for Saturday, November 16th is

All Natural Colors

Let's try to present colors exactly as they exist in nature: the same sunset-tinged sky, the same red or orange leaf, the same range of blues and grays and greens seen on the side of a mountain. The challenge is to get your camera to record the same shades your eyes see, or, if you must, edit the photo to get it back to the color you remember. (It helps if you still have the thing you photographed visible for comparison!)  Whatever you photograph should not be dyed, painted, or made of plastic, but made of natural materials and left its natural color. If that color is a bit unusual for whatever it is, so much the better!

You know how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures showing natural colors. Archived photos are okay as long as you took the photo yourself and you're sure the colors are true-ti-life.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, November 16th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

Round Robin Challenge: Old Tech, New Tech

Hi, Robins! As I set here with my iPhone 4S and a not-so-new computer (two of them, actually), I find myself thinking about how radically our lives have changed in the past ten years, let alone over the past half-century since I started first grade. Which leads us to our next Challenge. The topic for Saturday, November 2nd is

Old Tech, New Tech

Show us a contrast between some kind of technology you used years ago and something you use for the same purpose today. Or maybe you want to go further back, and compare today's gadget with really old technology, as used centuries or millennia ago. Old photos of the old tech are fine, as long as you took them - but let's have new photos of the latest and greatest!

You know how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera and bring us one or more pictures showing off old tech and new tech devices for doing basically the same thing. Archived photos are okay as long as you took the photo yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, November 2nd, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

Round Robin Challenge: Spooky Effects

Hi, Robins! It's that time of the year again, when a number of countries and cultures celebrate either Halloween or some similar festival, such as Samhain, Day of the Dead, All Soul's Day, etc. Although our timing this year is a little off, that is the inspiration for our next Challenge. The topic for Saturday, October 19th, 2013 is

The "effects" could be a simple bit of staging, using props or special lighting. Or it could be the settings on your camera, or the way you edit the photo, or all of the above. Just show us something scary, odd or ethereal, using whatever tricks you care to employ. You know how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera and create any kind of spooky image(s). Archived photos are okay as long as you took the photo yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, October 19th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

Round Robin Photo Challenge: Fun Foods

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge is another fairly straightforward one. The topic for Saturday, October 5th, 2013 is

Fun Foods!

A fun food could be some kind of junk food, but it doesn't have to be. Maybe it's fun to make, or fun to eat. (Do you get to eat with your fingers?) Maybe it's a fun presentation, such as a cake decorated with cartoon characters, or served in a bread bowl. Or it could be fun because of where you're eating it or who you're eating it with, or just because it's not the kind of thing you usually eat. Whatever it is, show us your fun food, and tell us what makes it fun for you!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and photograph any kind of fun food. Archived photos are okay as long as you took the photo yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, October 5th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

Round Robin Photo Challenge: History!

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge has a pretty simple concept, and I hope you'll have fun with it. The topic for Saturday, September 21st, 2013 is

History!

Show us something historic. It could be the site of some historic first - the first thing of its kind, or the first time something happened. It could be the place where some important event happened - or was prevented from happening. It could be a place that simply preserves a look at some past time. Or maybe you were lucky enough to witness some historic event as it took place, or photograph someone who will go down in history. History isn't just what happened centuries ago. Sometimes we are a witness to history in the making!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and photograph anyone, anywhere or anything that is historic. Archived photos are okay as long as you took the photo yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, September 21st, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

Round Robin Challenge: That's Odd!

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge offers you a choice of approaches. You can show us something fairly normal, or go for something that is decidedly, well, odd. The topic for Saturday, September 7th, 2013 is

Here's what I mean. Option One: show us something strange, unusual, or just plain weird. Option Two: if there's nothing the least bit strange in your life to photograph (and how odd that would be!), just show us an odd number of, well, anything!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and photograph anything odd, or an odd number of anything. Archived photos are okay, as long as you took them yourself.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

Round Robin Challenge: Gone

Hi, Robins! I hope this next Challenge will be a little more straightforward than the last, but it still calls for a bit of imagination. Are you up for it? The topic for Saturday, August 24th, 2013 is

It was there. You can tell. Traces have been left behind, or there's an obvious hole, or void, where it used to be. Maybe it was a meal, or a mess, a business, a circus or a sunset. Whatever it was, it's gone. Your Challenge is to show us the spot that it's gone from! If you like, you can even do a before and after comparison: it was here, and now it's gone.

Here, as usual, are the guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and photograph a place where something that was there is now gone.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, August 24th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

Round Robin Photo Challenge: Listen to This!

Hi, Robins! Believe it or not, this next Challenge was inspired by the advertising campaign for the 1974 John Lennon album Walls and Bridges. The topic for Saturday, August 10th, 2013 is

The Lennon ad campaign had ads on the sides of buses saying "Listen To This Bus," buttons that said, "Listen To This Button," posters that said, "Listen To this Poster" and so on. What I'd like you to do is photograph something that you really could listen to. It should be something that has a very distinctive sound, one that we can imagine by looking at your picture. It could be a jackhammer or a barking dog, for example, a babbling brook or a children's choir. Natural or technological, pleasant or unpleasant, loud or soft, it's all good, especially if it plays in our heads as we view your photos!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and photograph something that makes a memorable sound.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, August 10th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

Round Robin Challenge: Someplace I've Never Been

Hi, Robins! For this next Challenge, let's do some exploring. The topic for Saturday, July 27th, 2013 is

  1. E Rita Rd & Nexus Rd, Tucson, AZ 85747

    Someplace I've Never Been
Maybe you just happen to be leaving for some far-off land in the next two weeks, but that's not necessarily what I have in mind here. As I've discovered in my weekend drives with my Dad, there are lots of adventures to be had close to home. Get out there and find some - and bring your camera! Just head off somewhere you've never been - a back street a mile from home; a new restaurant downtown; a museum you've been meaning to visit; a store you've never had a reason to shop in; a little park in someone else's neighborhood; a tiny island off the coast; the town of Surprise, Arizona; Moola, NSW; Olympus Mons, Mars...well, you get the idea! It doesn't matter where it is, as long as the place is new to you, and you bring back a photo or two, or possibly more than two!

The usual guidelines apply:

As always, here's a reminder of our guidelines:

1. Grab your camera and go exploring! Bring us back one or more pictures of someplace you've never been before.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, July 27th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

Hi, Robins! This next Challenge is inspired by the Arizona monsoon, which officially started two weeks ago. The topic for Saturday, July 13th, 2013 is

Get wet! It's fun! Well, maybe....

There are lots of ways to get wet, some of them more enjoyable than others. And it's not just humans that get wet. It could easily be a family pet, or even a household object. So show us someone or something getting wet. The what, when, where, why, how and who are up to you!

As always, here's a reminder of our guidelines:

1. Grab your camera or go through your files to bring us one or more pictures of someone or something getting wet.

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

Round Robin Challenge: Not Real

Hi, Robins! It's time (a few hours past time, actually) to announce the new Round Robin Challenge. I hope you'll like this one. It's a real chance to stretch our imaginations, and possibly our photo editing skills. The topic for Saturday, June 29th is

Not Real

Show us something that isn't real - an optical illusion, a fictional character on stage, fake pearls, a toy sailboat, a tofu hamburger...really, anything that looks like something that it isn't. Then tell us what it really is - and what it really isn't! For example, the dragon above isn't a real dragon (of course), and the background includes an artificial cave from a mountain lion habitat, as well as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. The fire is an edited version of a real fire on Mount Lemmon from the 1980s. Your not-real photo need not be that elaborate, but this sure was fun to put together! So let's see what unreal things you can photograph - or make it look like you've photographed them!

As always, here's a reminder of our guidelines:

1. Grab your camera or go through your files to bring us one or more pictures of something that is not real!

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, June 29th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album. Don't forget to link back to here in your entry, so your readers can check out the other Robins' contributions.

4. Please visit the other Robins' entries, and comment if so moved. The list of entries will be posted at the bottom of this entry starting around midnight MST on the Challenge date, and updated through the day.

Round Robin Challenge: Wild Thing

Hi, Robins! It's me, Karen, back hosting the RRPC after a much-needed break! I want to thank Carly once again for taking over the meme these past few months, and for her creative topics to keep us inspired!

This time out, let's go with a theme that gives us some interesting possibilities, some obvious, some less so. The topic for Saturday, June 15th is

You make my heart sing!

Maybe it's a bird or a bobcat in your back yard. Maybe it's a pitcher who misses the strike zone. Maybe it's Charlie Sheen! Maybe it's the boy you're daughter is dating, or your hair when you wake up in the morning. Whatever it is, if it's wild, we want to see it!

You remember how this works, right?

1. Grab your camera or go through your files for one or more photographs of something wild!

2. RSVP in the comments below with your name and the name and URL of the place you plan to post your photo(s).

3. On the Challenge date, Saturday, Saturday, June 15th, post the results on any blog, social media site or online photo album.

Karen

Round Robin Challege: On Location

Hi Robins :)

It's been a lot of fun hosting the Round Robin Challenges after all this time, but it's time to pass the project back to Karen! So, since this is my last outing with you, let's have a little fun outside with the cameras, shall we? Take me on a tour! This time around I want to see some FAMOUS SIGHTS!

Save The Date: Saturday, June 1st 2013
Subject: ON LOCATION

See those houses in the picture above? You might recognize them, but then again, you might not! I will share all about them in my Round Robin post, but if you do recognize them you probably know them from different TV shows and movies. And that is exactly what I would like to see from you! Has a famous movie or TV show been filmed in your town? Show us that famous LOCATION! Maybe there isn't anything like that where you live, so use your imagination and show us where you think a LOCATION producer should highlight in a film or show! Maybe you live in a big city, but it hasn't been featured as such, no worries, show us the most famous, or most photogenic building in town! Everyone, everywhere, can participate, simply put on your creative hats, grab your cameras, and GO BE LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHERS! Show us your ON LOCATION photography!

Save The Date: Saturday June 1st, 2013!

As always, there are some guidelines to follow...

1. Please post your blog entry for the challenge only on the challenge date! In this case, June 1st! It's not a race, and I will not be visiting your post prior to the challenge date, so please DO NOT POST EARLY!

2. If you will be joining us, please leave your information in the comment thread for this challenge in the following manner...

Your Name
The Name Of Your Blog
The Address Of Your Blog

We need your full information each time you join us!

3. Please include a link back to this challenge post, so your readers can play along! The more the merrier!

4. I will be posting a participation list at or around midnight (Eastern Time) on June 1st. If you will be joining us, please R.S.V.P no later than midnight, so I can include you on the list. If you decide to participate on the day of the challenge, no worries, just leave your information as usual and I will update the list as soon as I can.

*Please be sure to let me know if this is the first time you are participating, so I can give you a proper welcome on the day of the challenge!

*It's not mandatory that you visit the other Robins, but the spirit of the challenges is to meet new folks who share our fondness for photography, and it's good to encourage others in their creativity!

See you on Saturday, June 1st 2013! I can't wait to see you make your town a star! I will be looking forward to seeing your ON LOCATION shots!

Round Robin Challenge: Gardens

Hello Robins :)

It's time for an all new challenge!

Save The Date: Saturday, May 4th, 2013
Subject: GARDENS

Robins, grab your cameras, and show me some spring GARDENS! It can be your GARDEN. A church GARDEN. An amazing GARDEN in your favorite park. It can be a GARDEN of vegetables. A GARDEN of flowers. A community GARDEN. A butterfly GARDEN where there are flowers, but the main focus of the GARDEN isn't flowers, it's the butterflies! One of my favorite GARDENS ever was a shoe GARDEN! How about a Zen GARDEN? If you have created a place in your yard where you can go and relax, with or without flowers, a simple place of peace and comfort, then you might have the perfect Zen GARDEN, and that would be just perfect! If you can't find a GARDEN that strikes your fancy, perhaps this challenge might inspire you to start one! How about a birdhouse GARDEN? Or a GARDEN of pink flamingos? ;) On May 4th... it's all about the GARDENS!

As always, there are some guidelines to follow...

1. Please post your blog entry for the challenge only on the challenge date! In this case, May 4th, 2013! It's not a race, and I will not be visiting your post prior to the challenge date, so please DO NOT POST EARLY!

2. If you will be joining us, please leave your information in the comment thread for this challenge in the following manner...

Round Robin Challenge: Theaters

Hi Robins :)

It's that time again, are you ready for a new challenge? Of course you are! :)

Save The Date: Saturday, April 20th, 2013
The Subject: THEATERS!

Please feel free to let your imagination out to play with this subject. If you have an historic THEATER in your town, show it to us! If you have a THEATER room in your home, we would love to see it! But you can also show us what you enjoy most at the THEATER, the seats, the snacks, the posters, the marquee. Do you have a famously haunted THEATER in your town? Show us! Anything related to THEATERS is fine, but if you decide to do any photography inside a THEATER, make sure you get permission first, and remember to put your camera away before the movie or play begins. One more idea for the challenge would be to photograph your local THEATER at different times of the day and night!

But first, here are some guidelines to keep in mind...

1. Please post your blog entry for the challenge only on the challenge date! In this case, April 20th!

4. I will be posting a participation list at or around midnight (Eastern Time) on April 20th, 2013. If you will be joining us, please R.S.V.P no later than midnight, so I can include you on the list. If you decide to participate on the day of the challenge, no worries, just leave your information as usual and I will update the list as soon as I can.

Please grab your cameras and show us the Gates in your life! Garden Gates. Your Gateway computer. The Gate at your place of employment. The Gate between winter and spring. You could include a pet door as a Gate. Or maybe even a horse in the starting Gate at the races! If it's a Gate, you are all set! Ideally, I would love to see more than one interpretation of the subject, but as always the interpretation of the subject is entirely up to you!
