Round Robin Challenge: Something New (for 1/1/11)

Hi, Robins! The next topic was suggested a year ago by Kathy of Through the Viewfinder. The topic for New Year's Day 2011, appropriately enough, is

Something New

Or, as Kathy put it at the time,
This photo's theme is "New", whether it's Happy New Year, welcome new baby, all that's old is new again, etc. etc. you get the idea.
What will be new in your life as the new year begins? Is there a new phone or iPad, a new puppy, perhaps a newly remodeled bathroom?  Maybe it's as simple as newly fallen snow. Whatever it is, take your photos of your icon of newness, and prepare to post them on New Year's Day!

You know how this meme works, right?

1. DO RSVP in the comments below, if at all possible BEFORE the Challenge date. In fact, five minutes from now would be the perfect time to let us know you plan to participate. There is no need to wait until after you've posted to tell us about it.

2. DO include your name, blog name, and blog URL in the RSVP, thus:

I'll be posting my new photos!

Liza
Start Spreading the News
http://newyorknewyork.blogspot.com/

3. DO tell me if it's your first time, or if there's any change from last time, such as a new blog name.

4. DO NOT post until the Challenge date, Saturday, January 1st. Most blogging platforms will let you schedule an entry ahead of time if you expect to be busy on the day. But if you don't get to it on Saturday, it's not too late! Sunday or Monday is fine. The Challenge is open for six days to accommodate stragglers, although you're less likely to get visitors to your blog after the first day.

4. DO mention the Challenge in your entry, and link back here so people can enjoy the work of other Robins as well!

That's it! Go be photographers. We'll see you on New Year's Day!

Round Robin Challenge: Symbols

Hi, Robins! December seems like a great time to try out this Round Robin topic from Ruth, the Scrabblequeen, suggested in August of this year. The topic for Saturday, December 18th, is

Symbols
Peace symbol
Symbols

Ruth's guidance on the topic is as follows:
(something iconic, like a menorah or the St Louis Arch, or whatever)

The holidays are full of symbols, of course, some more obvious than others. But if holiday symbolism doesn't appeal, there are lots of other ways to go with this, from the symbols on traffic signs to icons (statues, flags, etc.) representing concepts. Whatever it is, photograph it for us, and tell us what it represents to you!

Now for the usual guidelines:

This comment represents my acceptance of the Challenge!

John
The Hero's Journey
http://athousandfaces.blogspot.com
3. DO tell me if it's your first time, or if there's any change from last time, such as a new blog name.

4. DO NOT post until the Challenge date, Saturday, December 18th.

We'll see you on the 18th!

Round Robin: Before and After

Hi Robins! This next Challenge was suggested by Vicki of Maraca. The topic for Saturday, December 4th is

Before and After

Simple, right? Vicki explains, sensibly,
Anything "before" and, well, "after." You pick what.

What will you photograph? Holiday food, before and after it's prepared (or eaten)? A tree, before and after the leaves start to fall? Some project, before and after it's completed? A room, before and after it's cleaned or renovated, or before and after the kids make a mess of it? Whatever it is, we'll be glad to see it!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines for playing along:

On the Challenge date, we're gonna let it all hang down!

Eric

3. DO tell me if it's your first time, or if there's any change from last time, such as a new blog name.

4. DO NOT post until the Challenge date, Saturday, November 20.

We'll see you on the 4th!

Round Robin Challenge: Colorblind

magc05567

Hi Robins! This next Challenge was suggested by Nancy of Nancy Luvs Pix, three years ago this month. The topic for Saturday, November 20th is

Colorblind

Nancy described the concept this way:
Basically, take a photo of something, change the color...make it interesting!

Most photo editing software has controls for modifying colors. If you don't have Photoshop or something similar, you can use any of a number of online photo editors. For example, I just found one called LunaPic, which has several really interesting color effects. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Here, as usual, are the guidelines for playing along:

I'm tickled pink to be playing!

Ludwig
The Spectrum Song
http://redyellowgreenredblueblueblue.blogspot.com
3. DO tell me if it's your first time, or if there's any change from last time, such as a new blog name.

4. DO NOT post until the Challenge date, Saturday, November 20.

That's it! Go be photographers, and then edit your photo in whatever wild colors that take your fancy. Show us green horses and purple cats, orange skies and deep red oceans, or anything else you care to create from your photos. We'll see you on the 20th with your off-color creations!

Round Robin Challenge: In the Window

This Challenge is now closed. Thanks for playing!

Hi, Robins! Way back in 2007, Tammie Jean, formerly of the blog Long Drives to Nowhere, suggested the topic "Windows." A year later, Momma of Sandcastle Momma suggested "Outside Looking In." Let's combine those two ideas, shall we? The topic for Saturday, November 6 is

"In the Window"

The idea for this one is to stand (or sit) outside a window, and photograph through it to whatever is inside. This can be a window of your house, a car window, the window of a business, or a display case, or even a window in your wallet. The only catch is that you are outside that window, and whatever you're photographing is inside. Perhaps there's a big holiday display window at a nearby department store. Perhaps you keep knickknacks on a window ledge and they can be seen from outside. Or you may be looking through a window at a beloved pet who is waiting to greet you! Whichever way you do it, there will probably be reflections to be coped with, and angles to be considered. That's why it's a Challenge!

So, would you like to play along? We'd love to have you! Just read and follow the following easy guidelines. People seem to be getting confused about how this works, so please read along, even if you've played many times before:

I'm looking into playing!
Patti
How Much?
http://thewagglytail.blogspot.com

3. DO tell me if it's your first time, or if there's any change from last time, such as a new blog name.

4. DO NOT post until the Challenge date, Saturday, November 6.

That's it! Go be photographers, and we'll see you on the 6th!

Round Robin Challenge: Bridge

Now closed. Thanks for participating!

Hi, Robins! Thanks to everyone who participated in our last Challenge. I really enjoyed seeing the variety of songs illustrated, and the different approaches people had to the topic.

Our next one was suggested by Steven of the much-missed (sometimes)photoblog at the beginning of 2009. I've been wanted to do it for a while now. The topic for Saturday, October 23rd is

Bridge

All around the world there are bridges, in all shapes and sizes, ages and colors. Bridges connect two places, enabling something to pass safely over something else; but the details vary wildly. It can be a little wooden foot bridge over a three foot-wide babbling brook, a drawbridge, a railroad bridge, a stone bridge carved out by the forces of nature, or even that big Golden one over the Bay that our friend Carly loves to capture with her camera. Wherever you live, I can almost guarantee there's an interesting bridge somewhere nearby to photograph.

But just in case there's not, feel free to explore alternative meanings of the word. Photograph the bridge of a nose, a game of bridge, or even something metaphorical, such as a bridge between two cultures. All I ask is that you follow the usual guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:
I'll strut my stuff for this Challenge.

Art
Feelin' Groovy
http://59thstreetbridgesong.blogspot.com

2. DO NOT post BEFORE the Challenge date. If you need to set it up beforehand, most blogging platforms will let you schedule an entry to post on a certain date and time. But yes, you MAY POST up to 6 DAYS AFTER the date if you forget or something comes up that delays your entry. That said, you will get more visitors to your entry if you post on the Challenge date.

3. DO mention the Round Robin and link back to this blog. (If there's no link or mention, how is that a Round Robin entry?) Including a linking list to the other entries is encouraged but not mandatory. Also, it's helpful to stop by here and leave another comment with your specific link once your entry is posted.

That's it - well, the short version, anyway! If you need further guidelines, please check out our Welcome and Rules of Play entry, or drop me an email at mavarin2 (at) gmail.com. Now, go be photographers! I look forward to seeing everyone's entries on Saturday, October 23rd!

Round Robin Challenge: For a Song

Now closed. Thanks!

Hi, Robins! I had a fun idea today for a Round Robin topic, so let's just go with it, shall we? The topic for Saturday, October 9th is

Pick a song you like, and give us your photographic interpretation of all or part of that song's lyrics. You can either include the relevant section of the lyrics or, for a really well-known song, ask people to guess what you're illustrating. For example, what Beatles song does this photo illustrate?*

(The answer is at the end of this entry.)

The song you illustrate with your photo(s) can be old or new, world-famous or obscure. It's totally up to you what song you choose and how you interpret it.  Just keep in mind all the usual guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:

Love to take a photograph!

Paul
Kodachrome
http://rhyminsimon.blogspot.com

2. DO NOT post before the Challenge date. If you need to set it up beforehand, most blogging platforms will let you schedule an entry to post on a certain date and time.

I look forward to seeing everyone's entries on Saturday, October 9th!

NOW CLOSED. THANKS FOR PARTICIPATING!

Hi, Robins! It's time to announce the next topic! This one comes from Suzanne of SuzyQ421's Photo Blog, who suggested it in October 2009. The topic for Saturday, September 25th is

Togetherness

This one should be pretty self-explanatory. Show us anything or anyone who is exhibiting togetherness, whether it's a loving couple, siblings who get along, or cats curled up together. Or perhaps you have a more literal or more metaphorical interpretation in mind. It's all good! Just keep in mind all the usual guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:

Round Robin Challenge: Fenced In

NOW CLOSED! Thanks for participating!

Hi, Robins! Time to announce the next Challenge! This one was suggested just recently by Linda of Mommy's Treasures. The topic for Saturday, September 11th, is

Show us fences, or things contained within fences, or half-hidden behind fences. Show us a white picket fence or barbed wire, rough-hewn logs or aluminum slats. Or perhaps you're rather go metaphorical on us, and show us something that is trapped in some other way. You may even want to show people dueling with foils or épées! What ever works for you, we'll be glad to see it. Just remember all the usual stuff:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below with your name or handle, blog name and blog URL, thus:

Round Robin Challenge: About the Weather

Hi, Robins! Time to announce the next Challenge. For this one I'm going to combine two old topic suggestions into one general theme. The Challenge for Saturday, August 14th is

About the Weather
NOW CLOSED!
Back when he was still blogging, Steven of (sometimes)photoblog came up with "The Temperature Is...", which he described this way:

A photograph which represents the temperature. Hot, cold or in between. Hard shadows to show the bright sun for example. The soft shadows of a cool cloudy day. Ice and snow if you got it!

Julie of Julie Barrett's Journal had a similar theme in mind:

"Weather." Not just your average bit o' fluffy clouds here - try for something unusual or extreme. Obviously, it's okay to dip into the archives for this one. Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with deadlines.
Got the idea? Basically, we're looking for anything to do with the weather. You can go for something subtle: colors of sky and qualities of light that we associate with hot or cool days. Or show us the most extreme weather your camera can find, or has ever found: blizzards, ice storms, hail, lightning storms, floods, serious fog, or the opposite: sandstorms, dust storms, or a day so hot that the air shimmers and mirages appear. Show us what you've got! Just remember our usual guidelines:

1. DO RSVP your full info in the comments below, including name, blog name and blog URL, thus:

I'm keeping a weather eye!

Windy
Everyone Knows
http:/everyoneknowsitsme.blogspot.com

2. DO NOT post before the Challenge date, Saturday, August 14th. Most blog platforms let you write an entry in advance, and schedule it to post at the date and time you want.

3. DO mention Round Robin in your entry, including a link back to this blog. If you don't mention the Challenge, how can we tell you're even playing?

And check this out!

Carly and I have been raiding the topic pool of your suggestions for something like five years now, and haven't asked for fresh input for at least a year and a half. Many of our unused suggestions at this point are from people who no longer play, and in some cases from people who no longer blog at all! Obviously we're rather use YOUR fresh topic ideas, so please include three future topic suggestions in your entry. Who knows, we may be announcing your Challenge topic before the summer is out!

That's it for now. Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: By The Water

Hi Robins :) NOW CLOSED!

Save the date! Our next challenge will take place on Saturday, July 31st! What will our challenge be, you ask? Glad you asked. This time around the challenge will be "BY THE WATER." Sound good? Any interpretation is fine, as are archived photos, but you know, I love seeing you grab new shots. So, go out there and find some bottled WATER. A WATERing Hole. A Glass of WATER. WATER on the beach. It's all good. :)

But Carly, how do we play this challenge?

Glad you asked! Here are some general guidelines for how we play the Round Robin Challenges.

1. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE. In this case, the date would be Saturday, July 31st, 2010.

2. Please remember R.S.V.P. your intention to play by providing us with your full information each time you play, using the following format...

Your Name
The Name of your Blog
The full address of where your entry can be found

Round Robin: "Guess What This Is!"

Hi, Robins! The next topic was suggested by Lisa of Lisa's Chaos back in May 2008. The topic for Saturday, July 17th is: NOW CLOSED!

Guess What This Is!

Lisa advises that it works best with macro photography, where you can zoom in close enough that we see shapes and textures, but not the whole thing. But if you have something so unusual that people would be hard pressed to identify it at all, by all means photograph it!

Let's make a game of this, as John Scalzi did with a few of his Monday Photo Shoots back in the day. Don't tell us what your mysterious something is when you first post your entry. Let people guess in comments, and then tell them when they guess right! Sound like fun? Good! Just remember our usual guidelines:

1. Do RSVP your full info in the comments below, including name, blog name and blog URL, thus:

I guess I'll be playing!

2. Do NOT post before the Challenge date, Saturday, July 17th. Remember, most blog platforms let you write an entry in advance, and schedule it to post at the date and time you want.

3. Do mention Round Robin in your entry, including a link back to this blog.

That's it for now. Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Broken

Hi Robins! The next topic was suggested by Julie of Julie Barrett's Journal back in May 2008. The Round Robin Challenge for Saturday, June 19th is NOW CLOSED!

BROKEN

Broken things are everywhere. They can be very public, or hidden away in drawers and closets. Some are visibly damaged, while others reveal their defect only when you try to use them. Some can be mended or repaired or used anyway, while others can only be thrown away or recycled and replaced. Some have already been lovingly repaired, but will never be truly whole again. Broken things have character, and their own melancholy beauty.

So on Saturday, June 19th, show us something broken, maybe even beautifully broken. And if you fix that thing that was broken, show us how it looks now.

Now, it's reminder time. Folks, PLEASE RSVP in the comments below if you plan to join us on this Challenge, and include your complete info, thus:

I'm fixin' to play!

James
JT's Sweet Baby Blog
http://imyourhandyman.blogspot.com

Even if you decide to play along at the last minute, please remember to stop by and leave your comment! There are lots of past and present players on our sidebar, and if you don't tell us you're doing a Round Robin entry we can easily miss you. If you don't get on the Linking List, then nobody will know to come and see your work, and wouldn't that be a shame? So! Remember:

1. DO RSVP in comments
2. DO list your name, blog name and URL, so we can list you correctly.
3. DO NOT post early. It's not a race!

Got it? Good! Now, go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Garden Portraits

Hi Robins :)

"GARDEN PORTRAITS" NOW CLOSED!

We haven't been doing much in the way of garden photography, so let's fix that! Save the date, because our next Round Robin Challenge will take place on Saturday, June 5th! And our subject will be "Garden Portraits." Our fellow Robin, Sherrie, who authors the blog, Sherrie's Stuff, submitted the idea of "In The Garden" way back in January of 2009, so I thought it would be fun to combine her idea, with an idea I had to showcase a particular part of a garden. When you put them both together, here is what I want you to do. Take an overall photo of a garden, any garden, then choose one flower or one vegetable, and showcase it as a portrait. Really get in there and show us it's beauty! Sound good?

:)

As always, here are some general guidelines for how we play...

1. PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY PRIOR TO THE CHALLENGE DATE. In this case, the date would be Saturday, June 5th, 2010.

2. Please remember R.S.V.P. your intention to play by providing us with your full information each time you play, using the following format...

Round Robin Challenge: Statues

Hi Robins! The next Challenge was suggested by me exactly two years and one week ago. I think it's time we got around to it, don't you? The topic for Saturday, May 22nd is

NOW CLOSED!

Statues

As I said at the time:

Statues - photograph a statue of some sort. It can be as large as the Sphinx in Egypt, or as small as a bowling trophy.
Simple, right? Get out there and photograph any kind of statue, large or small, in a public square, a museum, a church or even on your mantle shelf! Then get ready to post your entry on May 22nd. Here's a quick reminder about our guidelines:

1. DO RSVP in the comments below, preferably before the Challenge date. PLEASE include your complete info every time, thus:

Yes, I'll be there to unveil my statues!

Michaelangelo
Plaster and Stone
http://whenitsdone.blogspot.com
Please proofread your comment for typos, especially in the URL, and make sure it gets successfully posted. We've started to see problems with people posting comments that never show up. If we don't know about your entry or where exactly it's posted, it's kind of hard for us to link to it!

2. DO NOT post before the Challenge date, Saturday, May 22nd. If you're a few days late that's okay, although you probably won't get as many visitors. But please do not post early. As Carly says, it's not a race, and an entry posted early is harder for everyone else to find.

3. DO include a link back to this blog in your entry, so other people can find us and play along. We also encourage you to include a Round Robin graphic, and links to other Robin's blogs. We post the Linking List around midnight Pacific time on the Challenge date, and update it throughout the day.

That's it for now. Go be photographers!

Round Robin Challenge: Land Or Sea

Hi Robins :) NOW CLOSED!

I used one of my own ideas this week, hope you enjoy it! How does "Land Or Sea" sound? It's an easy concept, simply choose LAND or SEA to photograph and show us what you chose on the day of the challenge! The date for this challenge will be Saturday, May 8th 2010! As always, there are a few things to keep in mind about how to play along with the RRC...

1. Please R.S.V.P. your intention to play by using the following format...

Your Name
The Name of your blog, journal or website
The FULL Internet address of where your submission can be found.

Example

Carly
Ellipsis
http://ellipsissuddenlycarly.blogspot.com

Please remember, we need your full information each time you play. Why? Well, sometimes folks change their blog name, or the platform they are on. Sometimes we get folks with the same name, so having your information each time insures we link to the correct person on the day of the challenge.

2. Please DO NOT submit your entry prior to the challenge date! You won't be linked to until the day of the challenge, so it does no good to jump the gun. It's NOT a race! Saturday, May 8th is the challenge date, and you will be acknowledged that day.

3. If you are new to the Round Robin Challenges, please let us know so we can give you a proper greeting on the day of the challenge!

4. After your entry has posted, on the day of the challenge, it's a good idea to comeback here and tell us you have posted. This helps us update things in a more timely manner!

5. If you have any questions about how to play, you can always visit the Welcome Entry & Rules of play entry, a link to it can be found on the sidebar, or you can email us. Our contact information can also be found on the sidebar!

Okay, that's it. I will see you on Saturday, May 8th 2010!

Announcing the New and Improved Weekend Assignment!

As many of you know, Carly and I (Karen) are involved in three memes. The Round Robin Photo Challenges were started by the two of us, almost by accident, back in 2005. The other two are even older, started on John Scalzi's old AOL Journal By the Way in 2004. Carly hosts one of these, now called the Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot, every week on her blog Ellipsis. The other one, the odd one out, is the classic writing prompt, the Weekend Assignment. As of this week, the Weekend Assignment has a new home.

Announcing the new Weekend Assignment blog!

For a while now, the Weekend Assignments have been handed out from Ellipsis and from my own blog, Outpost Mâvarin, on alternating weeks. No more! The Weekend Assignment blog will now be your one stop for all of the following:
  • Find out what the current Weekend Assignment is, in the same place every week
  • Find out how to join in and play along
  • Help us find and promote your Weekend Assignment entries by leaving your links, just as you do for the Round Robin Photo Challenges here.
  • Find the latest posts by all Weekend Assignment participants (I like to call them "Weekenders," right on the sidebar.
  • Post your own Weekend Assignment ideas, and be one of our "guest professors."
  • Download the Weekend Assignment graphic in a range of sizes, to use in your own blog.

Check it out! The Weekend Assignment blog is now live and online at http://weekendassignment.blogspot.com/. The first new Weekend Assignment will be posted this Thursday. We hope you'll join us!

Round Robin: Anything in Threes (for 4/24/10)

Hi, Robins! The next Challenge was suggested by Marie of the blog Photographs and Memories, way back in 2007. The topic for Saturday, April 24th, is

* * * Anything in Threes # # #

Marie said at the time, NOW CLOSED!
"Anything in 3's, must be the same theme and presented in 3 images."
Get the idea? This Challenge is not to take a picture of three of something, although you can do that too. The Challenge is to take and present three different pictures of the same subject or theme. What subject, what theme? That's totally up to you! Maybe it's three photos of your favorite tree, or of three different bodies of water. Maybe it's three different treatments of the same concept or mood, or three photos of your child. Let's get creative with this one!

Of course the standard guidelines apply:

1. Do RSVP in the comments below with your name, blog name and blog URL. It helps us a lot if you give your full info each time, and RSVP before the topic date. Like this:

I'll be there!

2. Do not post your entry before the topic date.

3. Do include a link back here in your entry. You may also post a copy of the Linking List, which we will add to this entry on the Challenge date and update throughout the day.

Got it? Good! Go be photographers!

AND one more thing:

As most of you are aware, Carly and I also host a meme called the Weekend Assignment, a weekly writing prompt. We're getting ready to make a big announcement about the Weekend Assignment, and relaunch this six year old meme in style. The announcement will be right here in the Round Robin blog on Tuesday. Be here! Aloha!
